Your diet, or way of eating as I prefer to refer to it, should be flexible and adapt with you. One of the most common things we help clients with is feeling tired. Of course, anyone can suffer from fatigue and burnout regardless of how you eat, but as plant-based eating becomes more popular, I wanted to highlight some of the factors that can contribute to really low energy that are specific to plant-based eating. Protein helps to balance your blood sugar levels, which leads to more stable energy, less cravings and better weight maintenance as an added bonus. When we have a client who is recovering from fatigue or burnout or other hormone imbalances like a thyroid condition, ensuring they have an adequate protein intake is one of the primary considerations. Women should aim for at least 20g of protein at each main meal to balance your blood sugar and men usually require more this number varies depending on the individual. You may also need to add in a plant-based protein powder to get your protein up, especially at breakfast.
By Edith Ellen Smith, Dec 9, Severe fatigue, high cholesterol, chronic pain, and constant migraines left Edith with a low quality of life—until her sister inspired her to change her diet. Just a few years ago, I had such severe fatigue that I slept as much as 12 hours a day. My sister, Sandra, had high cholesterol as did I. Sandra had been a nurse and knew the benefits of whole-food, plant-based eating, so in January she decided to give it a try. Within a few months, her cholesterol dropped to normal. Sandra came to my house with her car loaded with food and kitchen tools. She cooked several dishes for me and shared some of her tips. I took three weeks to wean off soda, to avoid the severe migraines that I used to develop when not drinking caffeine. By the second week of March , my fatigue totally vanished. Although I still lacked some muscle strength and stamina, I felt like a new person.
