My whole entire life I have suffered from intense, debilitating migraines. If you are a migraine sufferer, you feel my pain. You know what its like to not be able to see or speak. Some of you may have ended up in the hospital before, unable to walk or see straight, with numb limbs and slurred speech. Migraines are horrible, life-altering afflictions and anyone who has never experienced one should consider themselves VERY lucky. Oh darling — I know all of this all to0 well. But, I have exciting news! In the past few years I have managed to get the intense migraines a month I was experiencing down to not so bad headaches that can be avoided if I catch them early enough. In order to understand how and why certain things can help us and certain things can not, it is important to understand how migraines work.

My migraine attacks would confine me to bed for days on end, escalating from an infrequent nuisance as a medical student to a debilitating burden as a physician. The on-call shifts became more difficult. That was no life. I threw in the towel. Combating my migraines became my new mission. Beyond a formal education as a fitness trainer, I rigorously studied the role of exercise and diet in healing.
Making Your Life Easier. Through most of my teen years I had recurring migraines that would leave me curled up in a ball in the darkest place I could find. Moving at all sent shock waves of pain through my body, and light sources seemed to dig into my eyes like daggers. At that time I used over-the-counter medication and lots and lots of caffeine to control my headaches, but at best these only offered temporary relief. When they wore off I was often in worse pain than ever. I’ve gradually improved my diet since then, though, which has showed me how critical nutrition can be when it comes to preventing headaches. Tweet Since I’ve consumed a low fat raw vegan diet and haven’t had a significant headache not counting one time when I was struck in the head with a barbell, and several other food-related instances I will address in this article since. I’ve worked with over a dozen coaching clients that suffered from regular migraines, and in all but two of the cases dietary improvement alone was able get rid of their symptoms.
